BOOKS OF THE YEAR

ANTONY BEEVOR

I have only just discovered the work of Javier Marías in the form of his latest novel Your Face Tomorrow (Chatto & Windus), an intriguing character play influenced by real events in the Spanish Civil War 60 years before. Marías has been described as a less melancholy counterpart to W.G. Sebald (also an admirer of his work). The flowing language and insight are utterly compelling. Nothing will stop me from devouring all of Marías’s previous books.
